Our Founder

Frank Webb, AIA, founder of Frank Webb Architects (teamFWA), passed away June 17, 2011 at the age of 62, after a hard fought and brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born and raised in Long Beach, California, Frank was deeply involved in the community, and concerned about providing a spirit and sense of place in his work. He attended Long Beach Poly, the University of Oregon where he received his Bachelor of Architecture degree with Honors, and later attended Cal State Long Beach completing the Graduate Program in Fine Arts. He founded teamFWA in 1990 after spending eleven years at Dworsky Associates, most recently as principal, and earlier in the office of Frank Homolka Architects in Long Beach.

An award winning architect, gentleman and scholar, Frank sought to make the world a better place through his love of architecture and his relationships with people. He was passionate and optimistic every day and in every pursuit. Any assignment, big or small was an opportunity to provide a “thing of beauty, and joy forever.” He was skilled in all aspects of his craft and brought incredible knowledge, teamwork, and experience to the entire building process. He was equally comfortable in the field with a hard hat and tool belt, or effortlessly solving Sudoku each morning while reading the Los Angeles Times. He was a problem solver with a zest for life who treated everyone equally. Frank’s people skills were his unique gift where he connected with warmth and integrity.

Frank was appointed to the Park Mile Design Review Board for the City of Los Angeles and the Windsor Square Association. He was a member of NCARB, past officer and Board member of the Cabrillo Chapter, AIA, sponsor of the Architects and Designers for Social Responsibility, member of the Los Angeles Conservancy, and member of the Board of Visitors for the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts. Frank was a consummate sports fan and tirelessly supported his beloved University of Oregon Ducks.

As an innovative contemporary architect recognized by both clients and peers, Frank and teamFWA developed a diverse portfolio incorporating new construction projects, significant renovation and numerous tenant improvement projects. Frank had the ability to build team consensus through his exuberance, passion and spirit, while exceeding his client’s expectations. He strove to produce buildings of timeless design bringing communities brightness and hope. The entire staff at teamFWA remains dedicated to the aspirations of our founder, Frank Webb.

teamFWA going green

The transformation of a former gas station serves as the location for our new branch office in fullerton. The narrow, triangular site, along a major commercial street, provided an opportunity to create an inward looking project organized around an internal courtyard which connects the two existing buildings. The new floor plan allowed the courtyard to become an extension of the interior workplace. The project enhanced the streetscape by providing a modernist design utilizing pure forms and natural materials. The studio building was designed to open to the private courtyard through new roll up glass doors and windows while incorporating energy saving day lighting strategies. The project design incorporates sustainable building methods and materials and is being submitted for LEED certification. Sustainable concepts included drought tolerant landscaping, water saving plumbing fixtures, recycled and local materials, cool reflective/insulated roof and improved energy performance.
